Channel 7: A Brisbane car park is driving a new trend in solar energy. Shade covering has been fitted with solar panels helping to power the P.A. shopping centre on Ipswich Road.

“The Sunshine State by name should be the sunshine state by action,” said Sam Khalil. “Solar carports can be rolled out state-wide to generate sustainable power.” Sam is the managing director of Shakra Energy, a world leader in solar renewable energy developments.
Shakra Energy’s managing director joined Sarah Hanson-Young and Larissa Waters, Greens senators, to unveil one of Australia’s largest carport solar developments in Buranda, Brisbane.
“This is the first project of its kind in Australia and we see great potential for the idea to expand across the state and the country,” Mr Khalil said.
“Shopping centres should be utilising their unused resource - carport roofs - leading the way in sustainable business practice. They can generate their own power, saving our planet’s resources, saving money, and providing shade for customers’ vehicles. It just makes sense,” said Mr Khalil.
“Our projects also turn your solar carport structure into an electric charging station for the likes of Tesla vehicles and more. This is future proofing and a huge value offering to a customer’s shopping experience,” Sam continued.
The Greens Senator Larissa Waters challenged the Queensland government to champion the idea and make the Sunshine State a leader in innovation through clean energy.
“The increasing demand for renewable energy projects will also drive new growth in the trades sector and place Queensland at the forefront of solar renewable innovation,” said Sam Khalil.
